Ensure you research your settlement well. Use all you have learnt about settlements in class and apply this knowledge to your task. You may refer to your textbook and the internet. Compile your research according to given quiz questions.

 

The project consists of FOUR sections: 1.   Do research on the settlement in South Africa that you have chosen. 2.   Place all answers in a document or write them down on a piece of paper. 3.   Complete the given 003 '' quiz '' in the SBA COURSE by filling in the answers underneath each question. 4.   Complete the '' file uploads '' in your given 003 '' quiz '' by uploading a sketch map of the settlement you have chosen, a google maps foto and a land use picture of your chosen settlement. You need to find a settlement within South Africa that you can study. You will need to do research and find photos of your settlement, or draw different sections of it. You may use pictures from the newspaper. Remember you will be required to upload these photos in the quiz. In the quiz, you will need to provide reasons why the settlement is located where it is. You will need to find out if the population has increased or decreased in this settlement and provide reasons why you think this has happened. You will have to identify one social or environmental issue affecting this settlement and discuss it in detail. This could be either positive or negative. It could be a recycling scheme in the community, a drug issue or it may be a pollution problem. You will need to create a sketch map of your chosen settlement, and use it to identify different land uses. Remember if you do research on the internet, you may not copy and paste directly from the internet any material. It is known as plagiarism and so you will get zero. If you make some notes and you use some pictures then you need to acknowledge it (that is to let everyone know you have used their information). This is how you do that: You copy the URL off the internet site and paste the information below the photograph or if it is information at the end of the task you have a heading called references and you past it in there.

The below information will be completed in the 003 quiz in the SBA course after your research is complete and you have all of the answers to your questions. You will need your research to answer the questions in the quiz, when you open up your quiz. Your task will be marked according to the following criteria:

 

QUESTION 1: (2 marks)

• What is the name of your chosen settlement in South Africa?

QUESTION 2: (2 marks)

• Upload a Google map image of your chosen settlement (referenced)
• As well as a picture of the land use in your chosen settlement (referenced). NB: The above pictures need to be in one document.

QUESTION 3: (5 marks)

• Describe the Settlement:

• • Select whether your chosen settlement is a rural or urban
  • Motivate your answer by explaining why you have chosen your settlement as either rural or urban.

– remember to use words you have learnt this term

QUESTION 4: (5 marks)

• Explain the land use in your settlement:
  • What activities and infrastructure can be found within your settlement?
  • What is the main activity contributing to the economic growth of the community?

Explain each of the land use points in its own paragraph. QUESTION 5: (6 marks)

• Settlements have different features, such as man-made and natural features. Study the image below. In the quiz, you will be required to select 3 man-made and 3 natural features that can be seen in the given

QUESTION 6: (4 marks)

• Explain in detail why you think your chosen settlement was built in it's particular place/area.
• What factors, according to your research, contributed to it developing into the current settlement it is

QUESTION 7: (4 marks)

• Discuss the growth and/or decline of population in your
• Motivate your answer by giving reasons for the change in population

QUESTION 9:  (10 marks)

• • Complete a field sketch drawing of a map of your chosen

You can draw the map (please do not use a pencil - it cannot be seen when you scan it) or you can design a map on the computer. (Please do not take a '' screenshot '' from google earth it must be a sketch map that's drawn.)

Your map must have the following components:

• Title/ heading (1 mark)
• Important features and landmarks onto your sketch map (2 marks)
• Compass (1 mark)
• Scale (1 mark)
• Map key (1 mark)
• a neat map that is a sketch map(4 marks)

Submit the map in a PDF FORMAT by doing a file upload in your quiz.

QUESTION 10: (3 marks)

• Bibliography included (there will be a block provided in your quiz for the bibliography) and pictures
• The necessary research has been completed by the student. END OF THE TASK.
