Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia (NMBA) is responsible for regulating the practice of nursing and midwifery in Australia aimed at protecting the public (Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia, 2017b). According to NMBA, practice refers to any role, which involves individual’s ability to use his/her skills and knowledge as a nurse including clinical care and non-clinical relationship with administration, education, working in management, regulatory or policy development roles for effective delivery of services (Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia, 2018). The scope of practice for each of the healthcare team member is defined based on the professional standards and legislation (Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia, 2018). Student nurses’ scope of practice includes undertaking full range of care activities that are expected of a RN under the supervision of registered nurse (Queensland Government, 2016). Student re-entry nurses have a provisional registration and are required to follow NMBA code of practices and need to work under supervision of RN (Queensland Government, 2016). The report discusses my delegation justification and ethical/legal responses as student re-entry nurse while buddying with Registered Nurse.
Clinical handover in hospitals provides nurses and opportunity to involve patients and promote patient-centered care (Spinks, Chaoyer., Bucknall, Tobiano and Whitty, 2015). In the shift that I was assigned required me to buddy a RN who was carrying out three bedside handovers.
Week 1
As a student re-entry nurse, scope of my practice includes undertaking almost all the range of care activities expected from an RN. At the beginning of the clinical placement, I would use my existing knowledge to carry out standard clinical observation and assessment of patient history and current condition and medications being provided. I will indirectly participate in the care plan for the patients under the supervision of the RN. In the Week 1 I will focus more on understanding and following the standard practices to be followed throughout the handover process under supervision of the RN.
Week 4
By Week 4 I will be more involved in the process of the handover by assessing the patient’s condition and current care plan based on the reports. I would practice the standard of thinking critically and analyzing the nursing practice by following 1.6 RN standards of practice. The standard emphasizes on maintaining accurate, comprehensive and timely documentation of assessments (Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia, 2017b). I would record the observations while assessing the patient. I will also use the 3.6 standard of actively engaging with the profession. It involves interacting with the RN and patient to have better understanding of patient condition and assesses the available information to effectively implement the care plan (Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia, 2017b). I would provide medications to the patient
