Context:

This assessment requires you present in groups an aspect of microservice architecture. It develops your ability, as a business analyst, to clearly articulate aspects of microservice architecture to various stakeholders who do not necessarily have a technical background.

Instructions:

In this assessment, you are required to form groups of two to four students and present a topic regarding microservice architecture in class. Group formation, registration, and administration guidelines can be found below.

Your presentation topic can be related to any Module topics, but you must add a substantially different body of new material to the class material already available in Blackboard. In doing so, you will need to carry out research and extend beyond what has been discussed in in class. For example,

Module 3.2 discussed RESTful APIs as a way to integrate microservices. You may either present other ways microservices can be integrated, or you may demonstrate the implementation of a RESTful API.

Here is a list of suggested topics for you to consider:

  • Principle of microservices– modelling around business domain;
  • Principle of microservices – decentralise all the things;
  • Principle of microservices – isolate failure;
  • Principle of microservices – [any other principle of microservices you would like to discuss]
  • Principle of service modelling
  • Comparison of monolithic architecture with microservice architecture
  • Challenges in splitting the monolith
  • Advantages of microservices
  • Disadvantages of microservices
  • Synchronous microservice architecture
  • Asynchronous mircroservice architecture
  • Comparison of synchronous with asynchronous microservice architecture
  • Microservice integration
  • Microservice deployment

You may also present any other topics related to microservice as long as your learning facilitator approves it. You should note that you must select a topic that is suitable for a 10-minute presentation and the presentation must demonstrate a reasonable understanding of the topic being presented. Therefore, the topic must not be too broad and general. For example, Principles of microservices is NOT a good choice of presentation topic. You must narrow it down to a specific principle.

You are required to deliver your presentation for a maximum of 10 minutes followed by a 5 minutes question and answer. As a rule of thumb, your presentation should have 10 – 15 slides.

Your presentation should contain

  • A tittle page includes students name, ID and presentation title;
  • Introduction;
  • Body;
  • Conclusion;
  • Reference;

All presentations are scheduled to be delivered in Module 6.2.

General Assessment Requirement

Track changes. If you use Track Changes when writing your assessment, you must ensure that the submitted document is the final and correct version of the document. That is, if your submitted report contains Track Changes or Comments or any other editing marks it may be awarded 0 (zero) marks. It is your responsibility to submit the final and correct version of your report.

Check with marking criteria. Before submitting your assessment, you should check it against the assessment criteria and the marking rubric included in this specification to ensure that you have satisfactorily addressed all the criteria that will be used to mark your submission.

Academic language. All submissions should be thoroughly proof-read for spelling, typographical or grammatical errors before being submitted. Do not reply on the ‘spell-check’ function in your word processing program. If, for example, ‘affect’ is substituted for ‘effect’, your program may not detect the error.

Group Assessment Requirement

Group assessment. This assessment is a group assignment for all students. Each group consists of 2 to

4 students. To ensure your success in this group assignment, please read and follow these requirements regarding group formation, registration and administration.

Group Formation

Group size. Each group consists of 2 to 4 students. Groups of more than 4 students must be split into two or more groups. Given the amount of work you need to undertake in this assignment, it is highly suggested that you form a group of 4 students. You may be added by the Learning Facilitator to groups that consists of less than 4 students after Module 5.1.

Inter-class groups. You must only form groups within the Class you are enrolled in. No inter-class groups are allowed.

Remain in the same group. You must remain in the same group for this assessment.

Freedom to form groups before the deadline. You have the freedom to choose your group members before the registration deadline. After the registration deadline, however, those who are not in a group will be allocated to a group by the Learning Facilitator.

Group Registration

Deadline. The deadline for group registration is 11:45pm AEST Friday Module 5.1

Penalty for not registering before the deadline. If you are not registered before the deadline you will receive no penalty on your marks; you will, however, lose the freedom to form a group on your own. The Learning Facilitator will assign you into a group.

Means of registration. To register your group, you must send your Learning Facilitator an email with “[MIS603] Group Registration” in the subject line. In the body of that email, you must list out the name and your student ID for each member in their group. The registration email must arrive at your Learning Facilitator’s inbox before the registration deadline to be a valid registration.

Group Administration

Conflicts. If there is anything that you think you will need to involve your Learning Facilitator, please do not hesitate to do so.

Burden to prove. If you make any allegation against any other group members, you bear the evidential onus to prove your allegation and claims.

Group marks. Everyone in the same group will receive the same mark unless:

  • there is an issue brought to the attention of the Learning Facilitator; and
  • the Learning Facilitator finds it is fundamentally unfair to give every group member the same mark.

You may be removed from a group. In some circumstances, you may be removed from you group due to your significant and persistent lack of contribution. Once it happens, those being removed from a group will need to undertake all assessment individually from the time they are removed. The marking standard and criteria will remain the same.

Submission Instructions:

Means of submission. One student in a group must submit ONE MSPowerPoint document (.ppt or

.pptx) via the Assessment link in the main navigation menu in MIS603: Microservice Architecture on behalf of the entire group. Physical copies/Email submissions are not accepted.

No Zipped files. Students must NOT zip the MSPowerPoint and submit it as one single zip/compressed file.

Complete and correct submission. Assessment, once submitted, are FINAL and therefore cannot be modified. You bear all the onus to ensure that your submissions are final, correct (correct files in correct format) and complete before submitting to Blackboard.

Extensions will be considered only in extenuating circumstances where the student has applied before the due date. At that point, students are required to provide the latest draft, in case the extension is not granted and to demonstrate they have earnestly done everything to avoid lateness.

Students are responsible for keeping appropriate back-ups and drafts of their assignments and to submit the correct version.
