This assessment item is worth 35% of your overall grade, and is designed for you to:
develop an awareness of and focus on evidence based management
describe a theory and apply it to an organizational behavior in order to provide insightful recommendations
develop recommendations (hopefully empirically based) on how the organizational situation/behavior could be improved
identify potential ethical dilemmas/considerations resulting from your recommendations and how you recommend they be resolved.
You are required to conduct a case analysis that demonstrates your knowledge and understanding of a core theory from the unit. This semester you will need to utilise Job- demands resource theory (JD-R) to analysis the provided case.
See topic 11 for background on JD-R, and we strongly recommend you commence with the
following two readings:
Bakker, A. B., Hakanen, J. J., Demerouti, E., & Xanthopoulou, D. (2007). Job resources boost work engagement, particularly when job demands are high. Journal of Applied Psychology, 99(2): 274-284.
Bakker, A. B., Demerouti, E., & Sanz-Vergel, A. I. (2014). Burnout and work engagement: The JD-R Approach. Annual Review of Organizational Psychology and Organizational Behaviour, 1: 389-411.
Please note, topic 8 (supervision) included a section on ethical decision making which is crucial for answering the last component of this assessment item. Please note, that the tutorial in week 11 is focused on this assessment, and the week 12 tutorial is an optional drop-in consultation session for the case analysis assessment.
You will need to analyse the provided case using Job-demands theory to explain how and why the theory has something to offer in terms of providing constructive advice for addressing the issue(s) facing Ash (see attached case study).
