Jasper Jones
Secrets are a necessary part of life. It seems that everyone in “Jasper Jones” is keeping a secret.
Choose one character from the film and describe the secrets they are keeping. Try to refer to some specific scenes in the movie where these secrets are exposed.
Answer:
Secrets are an important part of one’s life and David Jones is one of the characters seen keeping one in the movie. He hides the identity of Mad Jack from his son Jasper and never lets him know that Mad Jack is his Grand Father. He does so because he believes that Mad Jack has killed his wife Rosie as he didn’t approve of their marriage because Rosie wasn’t white. In reality, Rosie died in a car crash while Jack was driving him to the hospital after she had an attack of appendicitis. This secret is exposed when Jasper visits Jack to investigate him for the murder of Laura and surprisingly found him to be totally different from what he had thought of him.
The theme of courage is also an important part of the film.
Choose a different character (not the one discussed in question 1) and describe how they develop courage in the film. Make sure you explain in your own words what you think “courage” means.
Answer:
Courage is a virtue and a mindset which forces one to challenge the odds to do what is right. It is the power which gives one the ability to fight even when the stakes are high and odds are heavily against himself. Charlie is one of the main characters who developed courage in the film, after founding Laura hanging from a tree shown to him by Jasper, he does not abandon her or backs off from his friend Jasper so that police may not convict him of murder. Charlie started struggling to find the man who murdered Laura even when his parents are keeping a close eye on him and not letting him go out of the house. When the police is roaming around the streets to find the murderer, he sneaks out of his place to get a clue about the murder and faces the consequences later by being grounded for two weeks and digging a hole and refilling it as a punishment from his parents.
