In the world of virtual technology, cloud computing has emerged as the most sought after technology. It is a technology where remote servers maintain data, software, and application. The basic advantage of having cloud computing is to get all the applications to work smoother and faster, improved manageability, low maintenance, and enables the effective allocation of resources (Mavodza, 2013). The traditional computing techniques bears an added expense as compared to cloud computing to have the tools and technology to build an intensive application. In this paper, we will attempt to investigate the potential impact of cloud computing on the future of academic library practices and services in developed countries. The issues that bear importance are navigating through this borderless information resources, the rigidness to convert towards this technology, dangers & risk involving cybersecurity, control of data, the fair use of data, privacy, the limitations of the libraries into holding this ever-flowing stream of information, and knowledge deficiency in librarians towards these technologies. This research will also highlight as to how effective and efficient is to convert to this technology which provides ease in accessing the data and applications for the libraries in the developed countries.
Resilient library | Using the cloud | Implications | |
(Mavodza, 2013) | The libraries have maintained their character by being unadaptable to the technological changes which can happen without any prediction and are inevitable. Libraries which have adapted the use of cloud technology can now pass on information at a rapid pace which is reliable, accurate, and from a single authentic source. It has enabled the libraries to keep track of information which consists of trends and feedbacks to help in the process of decision making from this knowledge management. | Cloud computing and libraries can be analyzed after understanding the model of the types of services involved in this technology, the infrastructure to be used, the application platform and associated applications. The platform for libraries already exist with integrated software, infrastructure is both local and remote, and associated applications are also integrated. The resources required by libraries are so extensive that is impossible to purchase every single piece, that is where the advantage of cloud computing comes in. | Cloud computing gives a doorway to extensive resources yet acquiring them can be a tricky process which requires libraries to have strict acquisition policies. There are rising concerns of data loss, storage capacity and limited physical space. The technology is evolving and librarians are required to adapt to any change in how to handle these resources. It is essential that librarians are to be trained towards the use and benefits of this technology as lack of awareness can be ineffective. |
(Scale, 2010) | Cloud computing is not understood by many libraries across the world which makes them resilient to adapt this technology, while libraries seek the implementation of the best solution to serve the information needs of the users yet due to unawareness they fail to adopt it. | Cloud computing enables new workflows which are streamlined for all the libraries which help streamline their cooperation amongst them. For libraries to be physically relevant for its user they must adopt the use of cloud computing to provide efficient and effective services. | Issue of ownership, privacy, acquisition and the rights to access data has become a major implication for the librarians. |
