Task Description:

Students will be examined on lecture and tutorial material from topics 1-5. The exam will be 55 minutes in duration and consist of multiple choice and short answer questions.

Word Limit:

2500 words (excluding the results section, literature review table in the appendix and reference list) with a 5% deduction from the available grade for each commenced 250-word block beyond the word limit (i.e. a submission between 2501-2750 words will incur a 5% deduction).

As a Word document via Turnitin on the LMS. You will receive an e-mail receipt confirming that your final upload has been successful. Please keep a record of this receipt.
 

Academic Integrity:

Task Description:

In pairs*, students are required to write a scientific report examining differences in biomechanical

parameters between novice and elite athletes in a selected sports skill.

  • Students will be provided with a list of sports skills to select (including the gender of the novice athlete).
  • Students are then required to select from the list of available sports skills, and once confirmed by the academic, will be provided with a video**. This video will allow students to collect data on a novice subject. Data of the elite athlete will be based on information from scientific literature from primary sources (journal articles).
  • Once the video recording is provided, each individual student is required to use the software program Kinovea to analyse two kinematic parameters each (see Table 1.). Every student is encouraged to select one Category A and one Category B parameter to analyse (see marking rubric). However, the selection of parameters must be based on the sports skill and

Students will be assessed on the following:

Pair:

  • An introduction section which clearly defines the topic and elaborates upon its subcomponents using sources from scientific literature. This section also provides a brief literature review of the selected sports skill and kinematic parameters as well as a purpose of the report (15 marks)
  • A methods section which includes a detailed recount of the experimental The methods must be detailed enough to be replicated and be written using scientific language (see ACPE Style and Referencing Guide). Please ensure the methods is written in your own words and not a direct copy from resources provided – see ‘Methods (2D Filming & Equipment Information)’ for the required information for this section (15 marks)
  • A discussion section which reports and compares key quantitative findings of the results to those found in similar scientific literature. These key quantitative findings should be selected from the 4 kinematic parameters presented in the results section. This section also includes a conclusion which restates the collective findings and deductions (30 marks)
  • An appendix section which includes the literature review table with 4 primary scientific sources. These are discussed and referred to in the (5 marks)

 

Individual:

  • A results section that presents the findings of the analysis including 2 kinematic parameters per student, and is organised using text, tables and figures (graphs). These tables and figures are created using data unique to your kinematic analysis of the selected sports skill (25 marks)

o Note. Students will be awarded an individual mark for their results section and a pair mark for all other sections

  • Presentation, academic writing and referencing will also be assessed (10 marks total)

 

Task Procedure:

Step 1: In pairs, complete the Partnership Agreement form and identify a specific sport skill (from the list provided) that is of interest to both group members. Note. If you are a student re-attempting this unit you must select a different sports skill to analyse than the one previously submitted. 

 Step 2: Conduct an extensive review of the selected sports skill using literature to obtain background information and identify the common kinematic parameters investigated. Literature must be peer reviewed primary scientific sources; therefore, literature reviews, meta-analysis and systematic reviews are not considered appropriate in this section however they may provide useful information for the discussion section.

Step 3: Based on the research conducted, identify a number of kinematic parameters (see Table 1) for analysis in the scientific report. Each student in their pair must select 2 parameters to analyse in the results section and is encouraged to select one from each category where applicable (see Table 1).

 Step 4: Individually students must complete an analysis of their chosen two parameters for the selected sports skill using Kinovea software. Note. Kinovea is only available for free download using a PC, no Mac version currently exists. If you do not have access to a PC at home, you will need to consider alternatives such as accessing a local library or borrowing a PC/laptop from a friend or family member to conduct the analysis 

 Step 5: In pairs, students will then compile data and write up the report, ensuring that the Marking Criteria is used as a guide

Step 6: Students will have the opportunity to submit a draft to the Turnitin Draft Submission on the LMS to check for inadvertent breaches of academic honesty by the due date. Students are also encouraged to submit a draft to the SLS for support with scientific writing and referencing requirements.
