Mobile phones were invented four decades back. In their infancy, mobile phones were something that was unimaginable by the lay man as they completely changed the world of telecommunications. People were able to talk to each other wirelessly and it was just fabulous. Nevertheless, like any other newly explored cutting edge technology, mobile phones too were not meant for the consumption of general public and were mostly afforded by the rich. They were large handsets that weighed over a kilogram and were priced around $4000 a piece in the US (Butler, 2012).
In the forty years prior to their invention, the dynamics of mobile phones changed dramatically. The handsets which were heavy, unattractive and only provided the service of calls and SMS, were gradually converging into classy, appealing phones with exuberant designs and amazing services like the use of internet through mobile phones. Moreover, it was just this last 10 years when mobile phones truly picked up pace in presenting us with surprisingly user-friendly and efficient cellular and entertainment services. The advent of android and iOS operating systems were no less than a revolution in the telecom industry and the surge experienced in the global number of sales and revenues was truly remarkable.
In the present times, mobile phones are a multi-dimensional product which provides its users with so much of exciting entertainment that the fundamental service of communications, calls to be precise, have pretty much taken the backseat. There are countless applications which enable people to utilize a wide and extensive range of services in the dimensions of education, adventure, health, beauty and several others. Although the levels and methods of communication have shifted with the modern day phones, they do tend to substitute actual communications and social conduct (Palen, 2000).
