Introduction

The leadership within an organization plays an integral role in determining the prosperity of that company. Hence, in order to ensure the success of the organization, it is essential for managers to develop certain set of skills and competencies that will enable them to excel at managing the business operations and the employers (Reh, 2019). These competencies comprise of the knowledge and behaviors that managers must possess, whereas the skills include specific learning abilities that every leader adapts to (Beckett, 2018). These set of skills may include the interpersonal skills, leadership skills and decision-making skills. The interpersonal skill includes the ability to effectively communicate (Ashe-Edmunds, 2017), leadership skills includes the ability to delegate and develop employees and decision-making skills involves the ability to analytically think through the final decision (Moss, 2018). In this essay, the discussion will point to the importance of interpersonal skills in pursuing the job of a sales manager. 

Importance of Interpersonal Communication 

In this rapidly changing corporate environment, interpersonal communication plays a vital role in ensuring effective execution of the managerial and administrative responsibilities within an organization. All supervisory duties of planning, organizing, leading and monitoring encompasses the inevitable role of interpersonal communication (Singh & Lalropuii, 2014). There is rapidly growing literature on this specific skill, which portrays that this skill plays an integral role in developing an effective manager. This skill refers to the ability of the manager to positively respond to the staff’s needs by developing a non-discriminatory workplace culture where the staff has the freedom to disclose their thoughts, ideas and feelings and develop their full potentials (Matin, Jandaghi, Karimi, & Hamidizadeh, 2010). 

Interpersonal skills will enable the manager to create a work environment where employees feel attached to the organization. This is because the employees will feel that they can relate to the organizational goals and can contribute to the organizational success. Thus, this managerial skill will enhance the job satisfaction, productivity, trust, respect, morale and confidence of the employees and will enable them to enhance their overall performance at the work place (Matin, Jandaghi, Karimi, & Hamidizadeh, 2010). Furthermore, this ability also enables the manager to successfully administer the value systems at work, provide ample motivation and support to the teams and ensure a sense of responsibility and discipline amongst them. Current research appears to validate this view by asserting that lack of interpersonal skills in leaders may disrupt the execution of successful projects within team settings (Þórarinsdóttir, 2012). Hence, it can be believed that this managerial skill is essential for ensuring efficiency in all the business operations (Luthra & Dahiya, 2015). On these grounds, it is reasonable to affirm that interpersonal behavior will enable the leader to achieve a series of organizational objectives which will enable the company to prosper. Some of these objectives have been listed below. 

Organizational Change

Businesses aim to embrace the process of organizational change in order to cater to the fiercely competitive business environment. This process of organizational change enables the firm to go through extensive strategic and structural changes (Stouten, Cremer, & Rousseau, 2018). Hence, in order to successfully implement that change, a firm requires the managers to engage in the process of effective communication. Evidence for this interpersonal skill has been borne out by the research which asserts that effective execution of change is positively associated with the leader’s ability to communicate, motivate, coach, build team and reward the workforce (Khan & Ahmed, 2012). Hence, it can be asserted that in order to successfully execute the process of organizational change, companies should train managers to develop the interpersonal communication skills.
