A project and presentation on an Australian regional social, economic, political or cultural issue. Examples include: poker machine reform in Ballarat, anti-mosque movement in Bendigo, local anti- drug/ice groups/processes, anti-development groups, reform of child protection processes, ban plastic bags from supermarkets, promoting the dignity to die, removing sugar from children's diets, changing the date of Australia day etc.
You will be allocated groups in the first seminar. Everyone in the group must participate in planning and facilitating the action. The group is required to plan a real process and then perform via presentation the various aspects of the advocacy and/or social action. The presentation cannot be static, it must involve audience participation and involve some kind of mock action like a public meeting, a protest, using social media to highlight an issue, an experiential activity or a performance of a skit: (Watch Blue Eye https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Nqv9k3jbtYU) The presentation should be no more than 20 minutes be the equivalent to 2,500 words and demonstrate: models of advocacy or social action; theories underpinning advocacy or social action; successful practices of advocacy or social action; barriers to successful advocacy or social action; and reflection on your group's processes and action.
