MSWPG7214-ADVOCATING FOR INDIVIDUALS, FAMILES, GROUPS AND COMMUNITIES

ASSESSMENT 1: Identify current social, political, economic and/or cultural issues and the individual and collective responses that arise from these issues.

Collect and develop an annotation of material about a specific social action/movement pertaining to particular recent social, political, economic and/or cultural issues. Examples include: refugee detention, climate change, Loud Fence campaign, women's reproductive rights, gun control, on-line bullying/ harassment, sexting, marriage equality, disability services (NDIS), Gonski funding of schools, Indigenous recognition in the constitution, anti-Halal certification, anti-Mosque groups and there are many more. Material for this annotation can derive from mainstream media (newspapers, television, and radio), social media (Facebook groups, twitter, and crowdfunding sites), web sites of specific groups, politicians, political parties and other activist organisations like GetUp. Portfolio presentation needs to be 1,500 words. Each piece of material needs to be annotated with a summary that outlines: A description of the item if there is no visual image or URL. Clear outline/explanation of the purpose of each piece of advocacy A short analysis of the strengths and weaknesses of the piece of advocacy A short discussion of obvious or hidden references to theories, philosophies or ideologies Coherence and logic of student work and appropriate referencing
