You must choose one of the following issues. For each issue, you are required to identify a problem evident for a nominated group. That is, you must identify for whom this is a problem and that the issue exists, or not and to what extent. Then, research the issue and possible strategies for tackling the issue. For example, for topic 1 you might look for research about the prevalence and nature of racism in Australian universities, and research some anti-racism strategies, such as bystander action, or anti-racism training. You will be required to draw upon the materials provided on the cloud site and readings in order to demonstrate that you have engaged with the key concepts we have discussed in this unit.

o Prejudice and discrimination against African migrants in Australia
o Integration and assimilation of indigenous people in the 20th century in Australia
o Integration and/or assimilation of university exchange students when studying abroad
o Racial bias in online dating profiles– is it racism and how might it affect users?
o Ethnocentrism and islamophobia in Australian society
o The changing role of religion/church/faith in an increasingly individualistic, digital world.
o Ethnocentrism among expatriate professionals when working overseas (you may wish to focus on business people, or development or humanitarian workers, or some other sub-category of professionals)
o Intergenerational Cultural Identity. How has it changed in recent history? Grandparents, parents, now you. What is different and why?

For some of these topics, particularly those towards the bottom of the list, you may not find research directly on these topics. Rather, you may need to research the concept (for example. ethnocentrism) and the context (for example expatriate professionals) and make the links. This is particularly the case when looking for strategies for tackling the issue – you will have more success if you look for general strategies to tackle, for example, prejudice, and then you do the work of applying these lessons to your case. The report template is to be utilised and attention paid to the setting out of the report.
The report is to include your reflection on your own intercultural competence as well as an exploration of the key concepts of the unit. Evidence of understanding of and engagement with these concepts is required.
You will receive further instructions, guidance and ideas about this assessment task throughout the trimester and will have the opportunity to discuss your approach. The report template will be explained during the trimester and the final lecture will include a review of all concepts and approaches to completion of this report assessment task. You, however, are expected to have engaged with the study skills site to understand all that is required with regard to presenting written work and correct referencing practice. The marking criteria and rubric will be explained.
