Guide on Writing a Critical Analysis

by Chris / Thursday, 26 August 2021 / Published in Education

Your teacher asked you to write a critical analysis essay and you’re not much familiar about it? Before starting to write a critical analysis essay or critical analysis of a research paper you must be aware of what critical analysis is. While doing a critical analysis you have to scrutinize the work of another author. A critical writing assessment may be given to you to test your ability to analyze a piece of literature.

The work to be analyzed is mostly a part of literature but you can also be asked to do the critical analysis of some artwork, drama, or film. A good critical analysis is a wholehearted evaluation of the literature. All the positive and negative aspects must be neatly reflected.

Steps to writing a critical analysis

Struggling to complete a critical analysis assessment? There is no need to worry about that because you will get complete guidance for writing a critical analysis here. Following is the step-by-step procedure you need to follow to be able to write a spot-on critical analysis.

  1. Critical reading

The first and certainly the most vital step in writing a critical analysis is the critical reading of the literature. If you are supposed to analyze a paper, you need to develop a proper understanding of it first. For writing a critical analysis essay, again you need to review the available literature before starting to write about it.

Underlying are the things that demand consideration during this reading process.

  • Don’t just skim through, read thoroughly
  • Read the text more than once, if needed
  • Highlight the author’s key ideas
  • Ask yourself that whether you agree with those ideas or not?
  • Take notes of the important considerations in writing the paper
  1. Create an outline

After reading the relevant material you need to develop a roadmap for your work, creating an outline will allow you to maintain flow during your writing and thinking process.

While creating an outline you have to identify all the key points that your writing will rely upon. You also need to make a list of logic and proofs supporting your arguments. Writing down all the subheadings before starting your work is crucial every time. So, after doing all this you are all ready to start writing your critical analysis.

  1. Write an introduction

This is the first thing you will be writing in your critical analysis. It is quite understandable that without an eye-catching introduction you might lose all the attention of the reader. So this is where you need to make a strong impression. Generally, the introduction should be a single paragraph containing 5 to 8 sentences.

The rule of thumb for writing a critical analysis introduction is that it should start with the original writer’s thesis statement and end with your own thesis statement. What it does is that it clarifies your approach in the reader’s mind. In between, you also need to briefly mention the key ideas of the author. The introduction should be such that it leads the reader into the discussion.

  1. Write your body

The body of the critical analysis paper usually consists of 2 to 4 paragraphs. Each paragraph should only focus on a single main idea. The aim here is to address the key points that were stated in the introduction. The main ideas can be supported with different quotes, pieces of evidence, and practical examples.

The body paragraphs are where you have to convince the readers of the claims you are making. So, the evidence you provide must be concrete and logic should be sound. With a good body of your critical analysis paper or essay, you will be able to push the reader’s mind towards accepting your conclusion.

  1. Write a conclusion

Concluding your critical analysis might be a bit challenging because here you need to close down the discussion in a proper manner. One thing that you should consider while writing the conclusion is that it should build on statements in your body paragraphs.

Generally, the conclusion should be 1 or 2 paragraphs long. The content of the conclusion is quite similar to that of the introduction but be mindful of not repeating the same things. The conclusion must not portray any uncertainties. It should be overwhelming and showing clarity in the author’s mind.

  1. Proofread and corrections

Proofreading is the inspection of all the possible grammatical and spelling mistakes in your work. You are recommended to ask any of your siblings, friends, or cousins to proofread your critical analysis after its completion. The proofreader should highlight all the mistakes found and then you can correct them without any inconvenience. It makes your work free of errors and makes a better impression on the reader.

Tips for writing critical analyses

So, now as you must have understood that how you are supposed to write a critical analysis, here are a few pro tips for you to write a top-quality critical analysis.

  • Always write in the formal language and the standard academic style
  • Support your arguments with all the necessary facts and logical proofs
  • Mention the references from where you have taken the facts to increase the credibility of your evidence
  • Don’t introduce your arguments like “I reckon” or “according to me.” It gives an impression that you are presenting your suppositions rather than facts.
