Online Tutoring on Differences in Foreign Languages
What point is the author trying to make?
Ans. Different languages are spoken in different regions globally. Whereas, all languages spoken across the globe are delivered in varied style and have individual rules and protocols to be followed. In the reading the author is trying to highlight that any foreign language when spoken without consideration of its rules would be hard to understood. Moreover, when any particular regional language amalgamates with a different region’s language a new form of language is developed that is convenient for the members of both the regions.
What key ideas show the author’s points?
Ans. Deliverance of all the languages spoken across the globe are also different. Every single language must be delivered in compliance of its individual protocols, like in western style languages during a conversation the speaker will continue from the point where the previous speaker has left, whereas in Japanese style the speaker would start from the very beginning without considering of what the previous speaker has said. Also, natives of two different regions having different languages, develops a new form of language according to their own convenience, which is well understood by both.
Do you agree with the author’s point? Why or why not?
Ans. Our living style, behavior, attitude and particularly the language we speak is influenced by our region we were born in and brought up. Hence, our actions and delivery style of our language is evidently swathed with our cultural and regional values. As such, I do agree with the author that any language other than the native language when spoken incompliance of its rules would be ineffective in a conversation making it difficult for other participants to actively engage in the conversation.
What questions do you have about the reading or of the author?
Ans. The author in the reading has only highlighted the individual rules and mode of deliverance of different languages as the major issue in understanding and effectiveness of any spoken foreign language. However, the author has not mentioned any other factors which needs to be considered while talking in a foreign language like pronunciations, appropriate use of masculine/feminine words, and use of proper titles for individuals in accordance with the age, or status of the individual.
What surprised you?
Ans. All regional languages at present have undergone various changes throughout their history. Thus, all global languages are the most advanced versions of their respective conventional regional languages. But how the natives of two varied regions living in a common region have developed a new form of language has really surprised me. Having no past history, the formation of new language influenced by routinely used words or phrases and other social practices is really interesting.
What did you learn from the reading?
Ans. The reading has added to my knowledge the significance of rules and deliverance of varied foreign languages. I have learned that learning any foreign language will not be an effective aid while conversing in the same language unless it is not in compliance of its proper rules and protocols. Moreover, when not in command of any other foreign language amalgamating your own language words with the foreign language that can easily be understood can aid in expressing yourself.
What personal experiences do you have that are connected or similar to the reading?
Ans. Last year at the airport waiting for my flight, there was a group of Chinese and French tourists chatting in a different language (merger of Chinese and French language). Feeling bored I tried to get involve in their discussion, and knowing a little bit of French I tried to mix English and French words. Though I was not completely successful in expressing myself but somehow the words I self created, supported me in becoming a part of their conversation. Due to my self created language, four of the members of the same group are now my good friends.
