Roles of Self-Awareness Essay

Hall and Chandler (2004) state “Subjective career measures such as job satisfaction, self-awareness and adaptability, and learning, essentially individual level factors, have taken on greater salience in today’s environment”. There was a time when to perform in a career option it was required that a conducive culture be provided to the individual and then the company could rest in peace that the person would perform. But, now the culture is changing, the companies are looking at a broader perspective. Unless a person can perform in hefty conditions, he is not worth climbing the staircase to success. And therefore the companies though do consider providing good work culture, but concentrate on searching the person who has career qualities in them.

Among the several other qualities that are must for an individual to prove that they can perform well, the two are self-awareness and self-concept. The first among them is self-awareness. It means the state when an individual is known to his own strengths and weaknesses. From the prospective of an employee, self-awareness means that the employee knows the part of his work at which he is excellent. And, he is also known to the other part of work which is his weak point. If this be considered and evaluated, if the employee is a willing employee, he would try rectifying his weak point and improving further, his strong point. The same applies to the mangers. When the managers knows well of himself, he is better at managing people and the entities. Same has been written by McCarthy and Garavan (1999), when they say “effectiveness of many management and career development activities can be enhanced by paying attention to the issue of managerial self-awareness”. Thus, if an employee irrespective of which level he is pays attention to self-awareness, he can perform better in his professional life, which would ultimately lead his to the success in his career.

Now, if the next concept Self-concept be considered, Ricketts (2010), state that it consists of several ingredients which include “self-esteem, self-image, self-confidence, self-determination and self-responsibility”. Thus if it be deduced from these, when the person has a level of respect for own self, has a confidence over himself that he can carry out work, has determination that he would perform some work and holds responsibility for own works, the person is a person of self-concept. These ingredients is themselves are the qualities, that are necessary for a person to climb the ladder of success. It can be considered as that unless a person respects himself, he cannot make others respect himself and unless others would respect him they won’t find him legible to gain success. Similarly it follows for the confidence, determination and responsibility of the person.

Thus, from the above it can be deduced that for rising up in the career, it is important that a person has self-awareness of his strengths and weakness. And, for the same success it is necessary that the person is a person of self-concept, having all the ingredient values.
