Background

Activities and the projects for local communities are basic essential elements of a society that can maximize the capacity, participation and inclusion of men in the society (Gillespie, 2012). The groups can also aid in building intergenerational solidarity by providing help to men so that they can discuss difficult subjects like substance abuse, violence, anxiety, depression, drinking problems and other mental health issues. 

1.1 Setting the Context

In 2018 National Survey of Mental Health and Wellbeing in Australia found that one if five Australian Males are facing issues like anxiety, depression and other mental health related. The survey also found that approximately 75% of the males that have been experiencing mental disorder also experienced psychological distress. 11% of men also experienced anxiety disorder as well as social phobia, panic disorder, compulsive disorder and depression. It was also found that male belonging to 85+ age group face more depression and other related psychological pressure as compared to younger men (see figure below) (National Survey of Mental Health and Wellbeing, 2018).

1.2 Demographics and Population of Berwick

Berwick is a suburb in south-east of Melbourne Victoria. Currently there are 48.6% male and 51.4% female residing in Berwick with median age of 36. There are total 47,674 number of people residing in Berwick (Australian Bureaue of Statistis, 2018). The table below shows the number of people above 50 years of age that are living in Berwick, Victoria and Australia. 

The figure below shows the age-sex pyramid showing the number of males distributed in different age groups in Berwick as compared to Victoria. The analysis show that majority of the males lie in age group of 40 and above (City of Casey, 2017). This clearly shows the opportunity of helping the males in Berwick who need psychological help and a discussion forum for discussing issues like anxiety, depression, drug abuse etc. 

The demographics of Berwick show a blend and mixture of different nationalities and ethnicities. In Berwick, the largest religious group was Roman Catholic as 25% of all people belonged to Western Roman Catholism while 28.2% of the people had no particular religion. Majority of the people residing in Berwick belong to English ancestry (28.2% of total) (Australian Bureaue of Statistis, 2018).  There are around 1616 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders living in Berwick out of which 47.8% are male and 52.2% are female.
